Guerin Catholic Repeats as Girls Golf Champions

The Guerin Catholic Gold Eagles repeated as Circle City Conference Girls Golf Champions at the Golf Club of Indiana on Saturday with a combined score of 341.  They were led by medalist Angelica Pfefferkorn, who shot a 78.  She and teammate Gabby Gilrowski were the only two golfers to break 40 on the back nine.  Angelica also tied for the lowest score on the front nine.  Defending champion Maggie Schaffer (Bishop Chatard), Bailey Jackson (Brebeuf Jesuit), and Annie Sullivan (Roncalli) all matched her with a 39.

The chase for the individual championship was hotly contested down the stretch.  After all golfers had completed nine holes, Gilrowski was in the lead at -1.  By the time the group containing four of the five top seeds were headed for their final tee box, three of the four were in contention for the title.  When the dust settled, Jackson and Gilrowski were tied at 79 with Schaffer just behind them at 80.  To many’s surprise, Angelica Pfefferkorn (who was in a threesome who finished a few holes behind) had already put the finishing touches on her championship round of 78 strokes.  When the dust had cleared and the scores were official, Pfefferkorn was named the medalist, Bailey the runner-up, Gilrowski third, Schaffer fourth, Sullivan fifth, and freshman Morgan Hicks (Heritage Christian) sixth.

The team scores were not quite as close.  Three of Guerin Catholic’s golfers finished in the top 7 en route to an eighteen stroke victory over second place Roncalli.  Along side Pfefferkorn and Gilrowski, Mckayla Tallman shot an 87, and Carly Hammons logged a 97 for the Golden Eagles.  Roncalli was led by Sullivan’s 85.  Seniors Sophia Egold and Nicole Clifford both shot 91, while sophomore Kathleen Ameis finished with a 92.  Brebeuf finished in third with 368 strokes, led by Jackson and senior Caroline Zortman (89).  Bishop Chatard came in at the four spot.  Schaffer and junior Claire Williams (90) were their key contributors.  Heritage Christian’s extremely young squad also did themselves proud, led by freshman Hicks and junior Lauren Chapman (103).

It was a beautiful day and a wonderful championship.  The Conference would like to thank the Golf Club of Indiana for hosting the event!
