Brebeuf Jesuit – Despite a weather delay of over an hour and a night of constant rain, the third-annual “Kicking Out Cancer” Night was another success for the Brebeuf girls soccer team. The team raised over $3,000 for the American Cancer Society and defeated Circle City Conference rival and defending IHSAA state runner-up Guerin Catholic 5-4 in penalty kicks Saturday night.
Brebeuf, now 3-2 on the year, has won three straight and is a remarkable 33-2-2 at home over the past five seasons. The Braves have never lost a conference game in their three years in the CCC.
Brebeuf scored the only goal of the first half when senior captain Brianna Arthur scored at the 23:48 mark. Guerin tied the game with a second-half goal with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. After a scoreless over time the game went to penalty kicks. Guerin missed the first penalty kick and Braves responded with five straight to get the win. Scoring for the Braves were: Arthur, senior Leigh Anne Roth, junior Sophie Weeter, sophomore Courtney Kelley and sophomore Gabbie Lindeman.
Sophomore goalkeeper Savannah McNeal was impressive in net with eight saves. Aiding the defensive effort for the Braves were: senior Grace Roberts, senior Beth Kelley, sophomore Morgan Shine and senior Kate Gunderson.
The Braves will next play on Tuesday night at 7pm at Circle City Conference member Heritage Christian
Guerin Catholic – GCWS got off to a slow start to open play vs CCC rival Brebeuf Saturday evening at BJHS. The Golden Eagles conceded an own goal at minute 17′ … taking to the half 0-1.
GCWS responded great in the second half, setting the tempo and having the run of play for the 40′ period. They would get the score level off a strike from junior Sarah Stagge in minute 59′.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the Golden Eagles and Braves went to PKs. Despite four balls hitting the back of the net for the visiting team (Bestard, Koger, A Ferry, Stagge), it would be one short of the 5 BJHS would tuck away. GCWS lose this contest 4-5 (PKS).
The Golden Eagles will host CCC opponent Covenant Christian Tuesday (6:30P VARSITY ONLY).
