The Boys Basketball team (8-3, 4-1) picked up an ugly win on Friday night, but a big Circle City Conference win, knocking off Guerin Catholic HS (10-3, 3-1), 79-71. The game saw the two teams combine for 51 team fouls and 53 free throws taken on the night.

The Golden Eagles had a strong start, jumping out to an early lead in the game’s opening minutes, but CCHS’s defense made GCHS fight for every shot, closing the gap to 15-13 after eight minutes.  Neither team found much offensive flow in the second quarter, as Guerin hit a shot at the buzzer leading into halftime to take a 26-24 advantage into the locker room. Junior Trey Flatt had a solid second quarter, and CCHS got a spark off of the bench from Junior Jaden Ashley, who scored four points late in the quarter as Covenant battled some early foul trouble.

The Warriors’ depth seemed to catch up to the Golden Eagles in the second half, as CCHS found the good offensive flow that seemed to elude them in the first half.  Solid offensive execution led to a very balanced scoring attack in the third, as Covenant put up 23 points.  Flatt continued his strong night, as he hit two 3-pointers in the third.  Senior Ethan Maudlin added five points in the third, while Sophomore Brock Buckley poured in six of his 12 points in the quarter.  CCHS inched away early in the fourth quarter, which forced GCHS to foul to claw their way back into the game.  Covenant sealed the game away, hitting 21-for-25 from the line in the game’s final quarter.

Flatt ended up with a team-high 18 points, leading five double figure scorers for the Warriors.  Flatt also added 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and took 2 charges in the win.  Maudlin went 8-for-9 from the line and 3-for-6 from the field to hit 15 points.  Senior Cam Shurig also hit for double figures, scoring 15 points and tying Buckley for a team-high 6 rebounds.  Senior Noah Hedrick netted 12 points while grabbing 4 boards and doling out 4 assists.  Buckley also tied Hedrick for the team lead with 4 assists and 2 blocks.

Senior Bernie McGuinness led Guerin with 22 points, while Junior Joseph Bobilya 19 points in the loss.  For the third straight game, CCHS was in single digits in turnovers, just 9 on Friday.  The Warriors also outdid the Golden Eagles with 16 team assists to GCHS’ 7.

The win pushes the Warriors to 4-1 in CCC play.  CCHS will now have to hope that the Golden Eagles can give them some help by beating Brebeuf Jesuit Prep (7-4, 1-0) on January 24, because BJPS defeated Covenant 81-67 in mid-December.  That would potentially put Guerin, Brebeuf, and Covenant in a 3-way tie in first place in conference with 4-1 records should Brebeuf win out the remainder of their CCC schedule.  If Guerin would defeat BJPS next week, and the Braves would drop another conference game during the remainder of the season, Covenant would win their first CCC title in both school and program history.

The Warriors continue their back-to-back road games on Saturday night, as they travel to Tri-West HS (4-5) for a JV/V doubleheader at 6:00/7:30 pm.
