Rebels Start Conference Play with a Hard-Fought Road Win
The 2017-18 Circle City Conference Boys Basketball season got off to a raucous start at The Nest as Roncalli traveled north to do battle with the Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles. The student section was rowdy and the band was rocking as last year’s second and third place teams locked horns. The lead changed hands several times in the first quarter, with the Rebels sneaking out a 15-12 lead at the break. Despite foul trouble for their big men, the Golden Eagles rode the energy of the home crowd to regain the lead heading into the half, 28-27.
Roncalli took over from there. The Rebels outscored their hosts 21-8 in the third quarter and only missed one shot from the field in the fourth. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to seven at one point late, but Roncalli’s foul shooters proved up to the task.
Guerin Catholic’s Jack Hansen led all scorers with 22 points. Jack Hegwood led the Rebels with a career-high 19 points. Joe Kirkhoff also posted a career-high (18 pts), and Kellen Schreiber put in another 17 for the Rebels.
Roncalli moves into sole possession of first place in the conference at 1-0. Their overall record moves to 2-0. They will next face future Circle City Conference member Covenant Christian (2-1) at home on Saturday night at 7:30. This game will serve as their CYO Night. It will also be the first time these two teams have ever met. Their next conference game will come against Bishop Chatard at the State Fairgrounds on February 1st.
Guerin Catholic falls to 1-1, 0-1 in the conference. They will host Hamilton Heights (0-3) at 7:30 in The Nest. The Golden Eagles are 6-4 against the Huskies over their last ten meetings, but Hamilton Heights has emerged victorious from the last two titanic struggles. Last year, the Huskies won 57-46 at home. Guerin Catholic’s next conference game will be against Heritage Christian on December 15th.
