Baseball – Covenant wins pitchers' dual over Heritage

Covenant Christian –

The Baseball team (6-5, 3-3) picked up a needed Circle City Conference win in a rain-shortened game last night, holding off Heritage Christian 2-1.  The was moved to Bishop Chatard HS, to be played on synthetic turf, in order to get the game in, due to the wet weather plaguing the Midwest the last few days.  The game was called after five innings due to the continued rain.
Freshman Brock Buckley pitched a 3-hitter over five innings, giving up just one earned run while striking out six Eagles and walking three.  HCS Sophomore Gavin Crawford pitched 4.2 innings, only giving up one hit, but two runs (1 earned run), to take the hard luck loss.
Sophomore Darien Pugh picked up a bloop single to right field, driving in Senior Jake Brackett for the game’s first run.  Pugh then scored after stealing second base and a throwing error on a dropped third strike in the third inning.  Buckley made the lead stand up.
The win improves the Warriors’ record to 6-5 on the year, 3-3 in conference.  The 3-3 record puts CCHS in a tie for third place in the conference right now, tied with Bishop Chatard HS.  Currently, Guerin Catholic is in first place at 5-1, followed by Roncalli HS at 3-1.  Covenant and Chatard are tied for third, followed by Brebeuf Jesuit (2-4) and HCS (0-4).
The long-lasting wet weather has forced the postponement of tonight’s JV game versus South Putnam as well as tomorrow’s varsity doubleheader versus Park Tudor.  The Park Tudor games have tentatively been rescheduled for Saturday, May 4.
