Golden Eagles Win Conference and STATE in Historic Fashion!
Guerin Catholic, coached by Jim Alvarez, won the Boys Soccer Conference Championship by posting a 3-0 record against Conference competition! Roncalli finished runner-up. All Conference players chosen by the member school head coaches include:
Bishop Chatard – Sam Kauffman, Andrew Taylor, Vikas Walling & Eli Yancey
Brebeuf Jesuit – Madan Gibbs & Johnny King
Guerin Catholic – Gus Allen, Ryan McGrath, Cooper Prather, Will Scheu & Christian Zermeno
Roncalli – Jonny Harlow, Cole Huff & Sam Purdy
Post season tournament action found Brebeuf Jesuit losing a tough contest to Zionsville, 1-3 in Sectional. Roncalli defeated New Palestine, 5-2 in the opening round; Greenwood, 3-1 in the second round; and then Perry Meridian, 3-1 to win the Franklin Central Sectional. Guerin Catholic hosted their Sectional & won 12-0 over Western Boone before outlasting Park Tudor, 3-2 to win their Sectional. Bishop Chatard won their Sectional at Speedway as they beat Washington, 8-0 and then Cardinal Ritter, 2-1 to win the Sectional. In Regionals, the Royals lost 0-2 at Brownsburg in the Regional Semi-Final. Guerin Catholic won their Regional by first defeating Delta, 5-1 and then West Lafayette, 6-0 in the Championship. Bishop Chatard also won their Regional by first beating New Castle, 4-0 and then Cascade, 2-0 in the Championship. The Golden Eagles stellar play continued in the Chesterton Semi-State where they beat Hanover Central, 5-0 for the title! The Trojans played Heritage Hills in the Evansville North Semi-State & won 2-1 to advance to State.
The stage was now set for an All Circle City Conference State Finals between Bishop Chatard and Guerin Catholic! The Championship contest played at Carroll Stadium at IU Indianapolis was one for the record books!! Both squads played tremendous defense throughout the regulation periods ending 0-0. Two overtime periods also produced no scoring by either squad, so it was off to PKs to determine the State Champion. After the initial 5 PKs for each squad, the score was still tied at 4-4! Now the PKs were one at a time for each squad. The contest was won by Guerin Catholic in State Championship record 13th frame as their goalie, Ryan McGrath, made a game winning stop for the Golden Eagles to win, 12-11 in PKs!! What a battle! Adam Jurewicz of the Golden Eagles was named the 2A Boys Soccer State Finals Mental Attitude Award. Congrats to the Golden Eagles and Coach Jim Alvarez!
