Bishop Chatard Brings Home Title
The Trojans battled familiar foe Cathedral Saturday evening in the IHSAA sectional finals. The two rivals had another exciting match as expected. It was Bishop Chatard that got on the board first, as junior Rebekkaha Guess slid the ball past the Irish goalkeeper off a pass from Elizabeth Jacobson. The narrow 1-0 advantage withstood until 10 minutes remaining when Cathedral tied the match at one apiece. Regulation and two seven minute overtime periods was not enough for the squads that battled the severe wind and weather and the contest was pushed into penalty kicks. Both teams hit four out of five penalty kicks which pushed the match into sudden death pks. On the sixth pk, Cathedral missed wide and sophomore Grace Underwood answered, finding the back of the net and the Trojans earned the exhilarating victory. Submitted By:: Courtney Burchett
Guerin Catholic Girls Win AAA Sectional Title
In front of an electric fan base for both schools, Guerin Catholic competed with Carmel for the AAA Sectional 10 Championship.
After the first 40M, the score stood at 0-0. The second half saw strong downpour and wind enter the scene. By the time the heavy storm let up, the 80M regulation had expired, with the score still at 0-0. The teams competed for another 14M (two overtime periods) before deciding the contest with penalty kicks.
Carmel struck first, and was answered by senior Cassidy Lindley. Senior goalkeeper Claire Gavin blocked Carmel’s second attempt, and senior co-captain Megan Wampler hit her opportunity. Carmel got on the board again on the third shot, which was met with senior co-captain Mal Bestard’s response. The fourth kick for Carmel sailed high. Golden Eagle senior Adele Stradling set the ball down and found the back of the net with confidence, solidifying the AAA Sectional Crown for GCWS.
Heritage Christian Falls in Penalty Kicks
The Eagles traveled to Triton Central to face their hosts for the Sectional Championship. No goals were scored in the first 80 minutes of play. This trend continued through both of the 7 minute overtime periods. Unfortunately, Heritage Christian came up on the short end of the penalty kicks, falling 4-2.
